可以被懲罰的原因當然千奇百怪、動輒得咎，其中包括「工作不夠努力」（當然是由主人決定夠不夠努力），或是「話太多，或以母語交談」（talking too much or using their native language）。連母語都不能保留了，何況是宗教信仰，所以所有黑人原有的宗教都被摧毀，全部被逼的改信基督教。

處罰的方法當然也又多又變態，像是「吊起來直到漸漸死去」、「用各種奇形怪狀的刑具箝制身軀」、「罰走水車」等等。

「奇異恩典」vs「奇異果實」

是的，當白人主人們凌虐完黑奴，興高采烈的在教堂當中，與主接近，享受「奇異恩典」時，掛在樹頭的，是一具、一具，垂著頭的，「奇異果實」……
